How do you subtly transform a jungle-clad slice of mountain paradise into a mini nature reserve and home? That’s the challenge!

Finding ElsewhereThrough every adventure as an  Explorer, I have subconsciously been searching for a place to call home…

As a correspondent and filmmaker focused on nature, wildlife and tribal peoples, I have been luckier than most to have seen so much of the world, but although so many places have been remarkable,  inspiring and unique in their own way, they have all missed something… and left me feeling that home… must be somewhere else! This is that place!  So my wife and I have called it Elsewhere‘  and decided to stay awhile…

The Cove’ @ElseWhere: A Natural Amphitheatre

This site is a diary in a sense, one that tracks the story of Elsewhere as it unfolds, sharing key moments. Beyond friends and family, if you have stumbled here, you are more than welcome. Here’s a jump link to the blog or you can simply scroll for more details.

So Whats the Plan?

There Are Two Inseparable Aims of Project Elsewhere:

(1) Building a Home: How do you build a new life in the wilds of Bali, sensitively transforming a jungle landscape into a home? Sharing the dream of creating a new life closer to nature is a big part of the story. However, it is the community, culture and way of life that makes this place so undeniable.

(2)  Become Part of & Contribute to the Community:  We haven’t come to the hills to laze around and grow old… There are a million ways we hope to apply ourselves.  PROJECTS

Plans: Elsewhere Bali

Here’s a fly-over video, description of the landscape, and our initial dreams laid out:

The land covers around two hectares straddling a buckled jungle-clad mountain range…

It’s a landscape draped in mature fruit forests, lush vivid green paddy fields, palms, and giant trees.

With two natural springs supplying crystal clear waters, a chill mountain river winds its way along our western border… A stone’s throw to the north lies Bali Barat National Park and the extinct but majestic Batukaru Volcano.

The river is dotted with plunge pools. a small waterfall, and swathed in coconut palms. There are two distinct areas of our land;  Upper & Lower.  Each zone is slowly being connected by walkways and jungle paths that, in time we hope will develop into productive botanical gardens.

Building Base Camp: The Cove

‘THE COVE’ Proposed site of the main building complex

The lower levels are where we hope in time to build the main residence… it will be a home but also a base camp for developing and launching projects. The site has three hills that encircle traditional rice paddy terraces. The dream is to create something that sits naturally within this environment, with different zones connected by tropical paths, pools and ponds: Emulating the shape, curves, and form of the rice paddies, a chlorine-free swimming pool will nestle against the house and be fed by a natural spring designed to flow through and back into the paddies.

The ‘Cove’ A Natural Amphitheatre

Temple Ridge, is the name that seems to suit the upper zone.

Set high on the arete-line of the mountain (@700 meters)  every morning the sound of a distant Hindu temple echoes out across the landscape.  Here we hope to build a  small but beautiful bamboo house with a 10-meter-high tower that pushes up through the trees to afford views across the valley and sunset… This top-site is where we have started works.

Getting A Feel For The Landscape:

I spent an incredible first month alone living on the land.  Going back to basics, Rising with the sun I strolled the landscape all the time listening and looking slowly learning the nature of things. As a result, we have made some basic plans, creating access onto the mountain, clearing areas and walkways.. simple stuff but exciting and transformative. The full story is detailed here in our blog Updates from Elsewhere,   If you just fancy a visual tour our Gallery  hosts some raw but revealing videos of the very first days, along with a few photo archives.

Updates From Elsewhere!

New Trails: Paving the Way

On my first morning, I discovered how sunlight moves across the landscape; rising from the East to emerge from behind the mountain at around 7.05 am… The picture above was taken at the river’s edge that morning…  to get to this beautiful spot we have started building a pathway…

Power Struggle: Eco?

It’s a completely raw landscape. Getting power and water on-site is our first challenge! We’d love to run on coconut oil if we could, power our lives with a clean combo of sustainable solar, wind and hydro, as others have…
